Carnival Yearbook.

After two quiet, covid affected years - the Notting Hill Carnival made its comeback this August. Despite the two-year break, the event held just as much history, self-expression and culture as ever. The carnival yearbook highlights how individual identity and style experimentation has always been an integral part of carnival festivities. The use of a yearbook format was no accident; it presents each individual as having their own personal style of expression while managing to maintain a sense of a larger community – just like these types of cultural events do. The styling and design of this shoot took inspiration from archive photographs of carnivals of the past: from Notting Hill-specific events of the early 90s and prior, to the original carnivals of Trinidad and the West Indies. The amalgamation of nostalgic style (with intricate hairstyles and cultural clothing) and contemporary London trends are documented beautifully within this photo series.
