Images over words: Drawing boundaries between disciplines
Catalogue and website design for MA Design (Ceramics; Furniture; Jewellery) at Central Saint Martins Degree Show

Muk was approached by the soon-to-be graduates of MA Design (Ceramics; Furniture: Jewellery) with a simple brief of designing a catalogue and website for their upcoming show. Elif has already worked with one of the students of the course, Maddie, on the SUNHOO project, so we were thrilled to be reconnected. We were greeted by a board of decision makers, which is always a bit of a challenge. However, we were pleasantly surprised by their decision making abilities when they quickly agreed on images being in centerstage throughout the book.

With that in mind, Muk narrowed down and pitched 3 ideas. The winner was rotated text over images, which forces the reader to literally rotate the book to switch between text and image. Based on this mechanics, we focused on the vague separation between the three pathways within the course, namely ceramics, furniture and jewellery, and its very interdisciplinary nature. The gradients allowed us to visually highlight the fluidity of those boundaries.
The website was designed and built to company the visual tone of the catalogue. It was designed and coded by Muk, customising the codebase of a website template.
