My collection takes influence from my own experiences growing up in a rural town in South Wales. My project touches upon my concern of the destructive effects that online consumerism could have on working class communities. The beginning of my research project was focused on the death of the high street due to the takeover of technology. this then led my investigation further into the anxiety of human connection in the digital age. My research made me question whether as our online presence thrives, do our physical lives start to diminish? My Final Major Project is a denim collection that explores the idea of connection and disconnection. The fragmented panels throughout the garments are to symbolise the effects that our online presence has on our day to day lives. This collection was made to communicate how the idea of ‘community’ is becoming less and less pertinent in today’s society. Throughout this project, I questioned whether we were becoming disconnected from our real life. I have used images from my home town to compare and contrast the physical effects that online consumerism is having on our landscapes as well as our mental health. This collection explores architectural shapes with industrial aesthetics through experimental constructions.
