Cruel World

  • Briony Teasel
In her graduate series, Briony has focused on the representation of adolescent females through her personal experiences, her work also influenced by iconic females within cinema, contributing toward an understanding that regardless of appearance or interests, girls can be strong, assertive and self-assured.
Viewers of the work are presented with the contrast of girlish femininity amidst an uncanny, darkened world.'

Review: This series of work has a beautiful use of colour and grain in the imagery which any image maker could take inspiration from, also Briony's composition truly shows how much this work has been inspired by film as she's managed to capture her images in a way so reminiscent of powerful film making. Images 2, 16 and 18 remind me of shots you would find in Japanese independent films and the series colour of Miwa Yanagi's Elevetor Girls.
