The web of cups and string is an interactive sound installation that allows people to play with conversation, memory, and anonymity; some cups murmur previous confessions, whilst others listen to you, creating a dialogue between the cups. When you speak into a cup your confession is not immediately played out but stored in the installation’s memory to be played later when a participant volunteers their ear to listen. The digital interactive sound installation uses high and low tech, playing with the affordance of cups and string. The initial project research was surrounding utopia and how one could create a collaborative utopia. With utopia meaning ‘no place’ and the very idea of a utopia is a conflicting personal idea of a perfect world, the project then developed to visually show this collective evolving conversation. The project won the IdeasTap Graduate Award 2014 for Digital Design.
