Datablock

  • Geoffrey Bunting

Datablock is a type experiment, designed to create a typeface built on data. In this case, a monospaced character is altered due to a) the classification of a letter, and b) a unique code given to each letter. Though not demonstrated here, the intention is for Datablock to have tactile elements also.

The numerals for Datablock are differentiated from the lettering characters due to this tactile element. The system in use is a vigesimal (base-20) positional numeral system.
There is also a thinner version with a different numbering system. This was devised as a response within an established fiction. So while it is not as accomplished as the original proposal, it does present an interesting aesthetic - especially in contrast with the original.
