Decode

  • Mia Kirkness

Concept Description 'Decode' is a complex look into the hierarchy of language translating the most common words found in print into an unfamiliar variant. A forced adaptation for the human brain to overcome, unconsciously decoding alien-like symbols which once would've been language simply skimmed over and taken no real notice of. Using scans of text Richard Hollis' insightful typographic book 'Graphic Design A Brief History', the symbols are placed over top to reveal and disrupt language. An exploration of vocabulary and graphic representation, in company with methodically placed icons constructing a sporadically assembled pattern on the recto pages. 'Decode' breeds what's considered mundane into a new cryptic code. University of Leeds Book Arts Module
