DENIM were founded whilst the group were at university and are made up of Amrou Al-KadhiGuy WoolfCharlie ParhamHugh WyldTom Rasmussen. Each Queen has a different story and identity. Glamrou is about showing you can be queer and Muslim, no matter what people think in a time of global Islamophobia, Crystal is about showing the world that working class people can rise to the top (just like cream!) and become show-stopping popstars. Shirley is a perfect pink princess but in the mould of Dolly and Kylie – there is steel within (and she might have been extremely bad in her past). Aphrodite may have some presidential skeletons in her closet but is dedicated to being the best mom she can to her strapping sons. And Elektra wants to bring down this capitalist scum society – from the comfort of her dad’s Kensington mansion. Denim are all about showing the power of being true to your identity in a time of global division. And having the best goddamn party at the same time!
Sponsored by MAC Cosmetics and Bumble and Bumble, DENIM are a rainbow-coloured Trojan horse determined to take on The Institution. They have been performing to audiences around the UK for the last six years and had their debut (directed by the Soho Theatre’s Artistic Director Steve Marmion) at the Edinburgh Fringe to rave reviews and sell-out shows in 2017.
They have performed at many iconic spaces including The Arts Theatre, The Trafalgar Studios and Bethnal Green’s Working Men’s Club. Headlining the Port Eliot Festival with their drag show about escaping social exclusion, watched by nearly 150 children under the age of 12 and led to DENIM modelling in drag for a children’s life drawing class, they also performed a secret set with Florence and the Machine at Glastonbury the year that she headlined. DENIM have had sell-out residencies at the Soho Theatre and at Crazy Coqs at London’s Brasserie Zedel throughout 2017.
Following on from the successes of 2017, Denim’s very own Tom Rasmussen (Crystal) and Amrou Al-Kadhi (Glamrou) have been commissioned separately to enter the canon of queer literature with their very own book deals with Ebury and 4th Estate The group are also developing their own mockumentary-style comedy-drama television series with major UK television production company Red Planet Pictures.
These queens know no limits. Denim are represented by Kitty Laing at United Agents.
