Digicrafted

  • Laura Martínez
The pieces showcased are part of the project ‘Digicrafted’ which looks into hybrid design connecting the digital and the handmade. The project explores the undefined parameter where traditional textiles and 3D printing technologies are combined to introduce a new visual language that challenges and softens the digital aesthetic associated with 3D printed surfaces. 3D printing for textiles is often developed with an engineering approach rather than textile design perspective. Digicrafted brings the language and codes inherent to traditional textile craft into 3D printed surface design. The work consists of a collection of textiles that combine 3D printed elements with traditional labor-intensive needlecraft and fabric manipulation techniques. Specifically laser-sintered nylon is combined with silk and feathers. Martinez utilises this combination to highlight the juxtaposition between soft and hard, synthetic and natural, the digital and the hand-made.
