Gambian-Nigerian, 1993
Baingor Joiner is a 23-year-old Master's graduate in Geology, which he studied at UCL. He is also a multidisciplinary creative and self-taught photographer, best known for his eclectic interests and whimsical sensibilities.
Starting his pursuits into art in primary school, he quickly picked up basic concepts and techniques in drawing and painting, leading to his partaking in local art competitions. His keen interest in the arts continued all through his educational career, with teachers earmarking his knack for quick, accurate sketches.
His foray into photography would start over a decade later, this time on the streets of London in 2011. His style is up close and candid for the most part, building on his beginnings as a street photographer. He cites this when describing his work, ”’it’s hard to create an organic scene that tells a story. Because of this, I actually prefer if a subject is unaware of my presence for the most part.”
Since 2011, he has been to different destinations in Europe and West Africa. Documenting as he does so, he has created an archive that would prepare him for his first series of joint and solo exhibitions in Lagos and Accra, 2017.
The current body of work is titled ‘A Moment In Time: Libairia’. Images were taken on his two trips to Liberia in June and August 2016 were as a result of his father’s depreciating health. In his off hours, he explored the city of Monrovia to realize the history and status of a country in transition from peace to prosperity.
His work provides a passer’s by perspective of Liberia, telling various stories of liberty, freedom, conflict, death and rebellion. He aims to tell the African story through an honest lens. You can find him on Instagram & Twitter
