Dragkings

  • Mareike Günsche

Thinking in categories means limiting ones view. The series "Dragkings" portrays people that do not fit into the classic role model of either man or woman. Dragkings are mostly people born into a female gender role who embody masculinity. The majority of them define themselves as between the sexes. The series "Dragkings" expands this space between sexes. Over a period of one and a half years Mareike Günsche went on the search for Dragkings in Germany and portrayed them in their homes. Photos of Dragkings in such a private and personal form are so far unique in portrait photography. The photographer creates moments of irritation with her medium format photographs and challenges viewers to engage with gender identities. Mareike Günsche is fascinated by the transgression of border areas: between countries, people and genders. Her very personal pictures live from high sensitivity and intimacy, but also from the pronounced look for small, but striking details. This series was awarded the Canon Photography Award for Young Photographers
