Drawn to Light | Kitty Turner

  • Kitty Turner

Drawn to Light is a stop motion animated short film. The story revolves around a small moth who is unhappy with the chaotic and dangerous life of being addicted to artificial light. After an intriguing discovery, the moth sets off on a journey to break away from the crowd and find happiness. This is my final graduate project for Illustration BA (hons) at the University of Portsmouth. I combined my various skills including illustration, model making, animation, printmaking and photography. I started by creating storyboards, animatics and concept art. I then made detailed models, props and backgrounds as well as doing the animation, editing and sound myself. The music was composed by Emma Turner.

Behind the Scenes images:
Top Left: Making the armatured stop motion moth puppet. I made a wood and metal armature, then covered it in foam and fake fur. I made removeable legs and created wire wings that I embroidered by hand.
Top Right: Animating the moth. I had to animate my film at home due to the lockdown situation.
Bottom Left: Animating the house. I had real lights inside the house and fake grass that could be animated.
Bottom Right: Animating flying scenes on green/blue screen.
Left: Storyboards for opening sequence.
Right: A comparison between my animatic and the final film.
