Editing // SUITCASE Magazine Vol. 21: The Islands Issue

  • Olivia Squire

In the first of the 11 quarterly issues of SUITCASE for which I held the position of Print Editor-in-Chief, we explored the allure of islands as places of both isolation and exploration – as I explain in my Editor's Letter, "Each rock represents one of myriad possibilities, a tiny reality unfolding at its own pace and locked into battle with both the surrounding waters and the contradictions inherent in island living – isolation versus interdependence, tradition versus reinvention, borders versus freedom." I single-handedly conceptualised, commissioned and edited all content, as well as collaborating with travel partners to produce trips, overseeing the organisation of a cover shoot in Newfoundland, managing the budget and production timelines, and working with the design, digital and advertising teams on production, promotion and commercial strategy. I also introduced a new tagline for the brand, "The Culture of Travel", replacing the previous "Travel + Fashion" slogan. Highlights included: - An ambitious fashion cover shoot on the shores of Fogo Island in Canada's Newfoundland - A lyrical piece by Dolly Alderton on the artistic haven of Hydra - Influencer Nuria Val's stay at the Sikelia hotel on Pantelleria - Long-form features on Menorca and Venice - Illustrated essays on island conservation and female-led island communities
