Editing // SUITCASE Magazine Vol. 22: The Design Issue

  • Olivia Squire

For the Spring 2018 issue of SUITCASE Magazine I chose to focus on the subject of design and its relationship to travel. As I explain in my Editor's Letter, "When it comes to travel, design isn’t just the latest luxury hotel, but rather the remoulding of destinations as they adapt to changing cultural climates. In short, to design is to indulge our capacity to construct an alternate future and an act of optimism, even defiance, creativity coming to the fore when challenged or repressed. " As Print Editor-in-Chief I single-handedly conceptualised, commissioned and edited all content, as well as collaborating with travel partners to produce trips, overseeing the organisation of a cover shoot in Taipei, managing the budget and production timelines, and working with the design, digital and advertising teams on production, promotion and commercial strategy. Highlights included: - A fashion cover shoot in the city of Taipei in Taiwan - Two features penned by me on gentrification in Detroit and Wales's The Life House, the latter of which saw me nominated for Young Travel Writer of the Year at the Travel Media Awards 2018 - An experimental article by poet Himali Singh Soin about what future life on Mars might look like - A spotlight on Dubai's emerging creative scene - Shipwrecking the poet Rosalind Jana at a creative retreat on an isolated Norwegian island - Long-form features on the design sensibilities of Bangkok, Tel Aviv and Johannesburg
