Editing // SUITCASE Magazine Vol. 23: The Adventure Issue

  • Olivia Squire

Given my lifelong aversion to adrenalin-seeking and tendency towards being accident prone, for the summer 2018 issue of SUITCASE I wanted to re-evaluate the definition of "adventure" for the contemporary traveller. As I explained in my Editor's Letter, the traditional "narrative of conquest cemented adventure as a self-centred, grandiose quest to impose our own worldview. Yet in a more culturally sensitive era when much of the globe has been mapped, this meaning has shifted. Although the lure of the frontier still appeals, the modern pioneer seeks immersion rather than dominion." As Print Editor-in-Chief I single-handedly conceptualised, commissioned and edited all content, as well as collaborating with travel partners to produce trips, managing the budget and production timelines, and working with the design, digital and advertising teams on production, promotion and commercial strategy. Highlights included: - Replacing the fashion shoots that had previously graced the magazine's cover with a more authentic, less manufactured travel shoot by the photographer Yuri Andries in Gansu, China, to reflect the shift in travel preferences from glamour to grit - A long-form feature written by me about the future of the Bornean rainforest against a backdrop of rampant deforestation - Some of our best original photography to date shot on location in China, New Zealand, Arizona, Borneo and Bhutan - A photo diary of Bhutan captured by environmental activist and influencer Jack Harries - A love story that unfolded along the tracks of the Trans-Mongolian Railway
