Editing // SUITCASE Vol. 24, The Slow Issue

  • Olivia Squire

Before "slow travel" became a buzzword, I decided to dedicate the autumn 2018 issue of SUITCASE to the concept of more mindful, off-grid and thoughtful travel experiences. As I explained in my Editor's Letter, this backlash against the relentless pace of modern living "looks to redress the balance by putting meaning over money, savouring the moment over bolting it down and moving counter-culturally into the stream of the slow". As Print Editor-in-Chief I single-handedly conceptualised, commissioned and edited all content, as well as collaborating with travel partners to produce trips, managing the budget and production timelines, and working with the design, digital and advertising teams on production, promotion and commercial strategy. Highlights included: - Resuscitating the practice of pilgrimage in Britain with a piece written along the Old Way to Canterbury - An illustrated journey on the Venice-Simplon Orient Express from Venice to Paris, for which the writer was later nominated for the AITO Travel Writer of the Year Award 2019 - My long-form feature about mountain pilgrimaging with Yamabushi monks in Japan's Shonai region, a practice only recently opened up to Westerners - Sending two strangers out into a Swedish archipelago armed with only a canoe, a tent, some food supplies and a sense of humour - Epic journeys on foot, boat and bike through Finland, Egypt and Transylvania respectively
