Editing // SUITCASE Vol. 25, The Pioneer Issue

  • Olivia Squire

For the 25th edition of SUITCASE Magazine, I wanted to choose a topic that reflected a personal milestone for the brand as well as looking forward to the future of travel. I decided on the theme "Pioneer" in order to spotlight a few of the people, concepts and places that are pushing towards a new way of travelling. As I set out in my Editor's Letter, "For our 25th issue we wanted to map the people and concepts daring to alter the way we travel – but rather than targeting "influencers" or tech billionaires, we discovered individuals and whole communities quietly carving out conduits for change and pioneering a new kind of world, for the planet and all those who inhabit it". As Print Editor-in-Chief I single-handedly conceptualised, commissioned and edited all content, as well as collaborating with travel partners to produce trips, managing the budget and production timelines, and working with the design, digital and advertising teams on production, promotion and commercial strategy. We also added a special coloured spine and silver foil lettering to the cover to set the issue apart from its predecessors on the shelf. Highlights included: - A personal diary from the freediver and ocean conservation champion Hanli Prinsloo on protecting life beneath the waves - My cover story with photographer Benjamin Hardman on travelling to the brink of Svalbard in between seasons - A trippy article on how micro-dosing, canna-tourism and virtual reality may make the next frontiers of transformative travel take place in the mind - An epic, off-grid expedition through untouched Madagascar - Photo diaries from Steve McCurry, Chris Burkard and Aron Klein
