I worked with Eleventh Church of Christ, Scientist, London to enhance their visual presence in the Baker Street area of London. The church wanted to communicate their ethos to the public and to raise awareness of their Reading Room in Baker Street. This included a large format poster to be displayed on the London Underground at Baker Street station. This poster is currently on display in the London Tube network, at Baker Street station. The poster is displayed using CBS advertising on the London Underground, and was designed to match their print requirements. The poster’s layout is intended to be quick to read, and to direct the reader to the street location of the church’s public Reading Room (a short walk away on Baker Street). The client supplied the quote on this poster, and specified that it should be the core focus of the advert. The design works at bringing the 19th century quote into a modern day context - specifically its immediate neighbourhood in London. The lifetime of this advertisement was open ended at the time of its design, and I used clear typefaces and non-specific imagery to help its message remain relevant into the future. I felt strongly that a common need of modern-day Londoners, especially when travelling crowded Underground networks, is to be seen as individuals. Because of the pace of life and the volume of people, the city can seem a dehumanised place. I designed the poster as though the quote is speaking to the individual; offering comfort. After this poster went on display at the underground station, the church noticed a rise in the footfall through their Reading Room on Baker Street.
