Fear Of Silence

  • Jovana Mladenovic

What really unsettles me is silence. Silence in our loneliness, silence in our communication, silence in the people all around us. A train full of strangers, filled with silence I believe can be slightly uncomfortable as is silence at the dinner table. The sudden surge of social networking and portable technology has given rise to multiple personalities forming within society and I aim to capture the effects of this ever growing problem. My idea is to look upon real people and how they feel when they are confronted with silence. I want to present how they feel inside through psychological portraiture, revealing their inner turmoil. This was a studio shoot taken using a medium format camera and with the use of natural light. I shot six different emotions with three pale and ginger blonde models on two medium format cameras and one digital for light tests. I used symbols on the shoot to strengthen the imagery such as tights to symbolise feeling trapped and the feeling of being uncomfortable within your skin. The peeling off effect to convey a feeling of escapism and soapy hands as a metaphor for a long shower and a sense of calm.
