This was a concept for an exhibition after the Latin phrase "Mysterium tremendum et fascinans" meaning "fearful and fascinating mystery" used by Rudolf Otto to conceptualise the "numinous"; the "wholly other", a powerful experience of simultaneous fear, terror, wonder and fascination. Inspired by this paradoxical aesthetic, these illustrations aim to combine beauty, softness and subtlety with macabre subjects and strangeness through the depiction of surreal, cosmic entities.
