Project Title: WATER
For Project 1 in Year III, I investigated the human body's relationship and dependence on water in order to be able to function as a whole.
THE FIVE SENSES
Focusing on the five human bodily senses, it became evident that all are dependent on water to function. The sense of hearing - distance mechanoreception - is used to detect movements in the fluid (air, water) surrounding the organism, the eye produces water and ‘cries’ as a defense mechanism, the nose smells by breathing in vapour and particles, the tongue produces saliva (liquid) to digest food, and the skin produces sweat to regulate body temperature.
To express the water's movement through each of the five senses, I created conceptual collages and paper models using water pipes and tunnels to portray and emphasise each route.
The Ear: HEARING
The Eye: SEEING
The Tongue: TASTING
The Skin: SWEATING
The Nose: SMELLING
Final Drawing
A conceptual portrayal of the human body solely as a water network for the 5 senses.
