Flags of the Former Soviet Union

  • Martin Shaffu

This project is all about depicting the visual forms of flags and what each one really means in another context. I decided to aim this project towards the countries of the former USSR as this subregion is generally a grey area to the British public, which leads to common stereotypes such as each country being branded as Russia which is far from true. This project is designed to briefly educate people in an efficient way about each of the fifteen countries through their flags, as each flag tells its own little tale about the associated nation. I came up with "The Guardian Niche" brand, derived from the popular UK newspaper, The Guardian. "The Guardian Niche" is an idea for a weekly supplement series, which are pullouts for the actual paper. I have also produced covers for other editions within the flags series as well as a map of the subregion, encouraging viewers to embark on a transcontinental journey.
