Fragile Surroundings: Narcotic Embodiment

  • Indigo Macey

Narcotic Embodiment is based on the concept of how fragile human’s can be in relation to drugs, the drug trade, addiction and the fragile line that is constantly walked along in relation to human life and drugs. When thinking of human existence and it’s surroundings, I thought one of the most fragile aspects along with the obvious environmental characters of Mother Earth and the Sea Sovereign, I thought of the drug trade. When considering this concept one must take into account the amount of human lives that are either effected, supported or controlled by drugs. When I say ‘drugs’ I mean both pharmaceutical and recreational, both types have huge effects on the fragility of human life. I have a personal reflection on this topic being prescribed a huge amount of painkillers at the age of 17 due to a chronic pain condition. I also considered the amount of young people, families and children that inevitability rely on the money made by gangs and drug sales that their caregiver, sibling or parents provide for them. This is so fragile, the uncertainty and danger that comes with this trade along with the sheer amount of people that is very unsettling. As well as the horrific amounts of money pharmaceutical companies make from tablets that can do much more harm than good. I hope to raise awareness and empathy to an often shunned subject, especially as the use of cocaine and other drugs is on the rise. It is concerning to see the rate in which young people consume drugs, especially when first starting University and not know what they are taking or who they are buying it from. These needs to be more open advice, research and help for young people because despite it being illegal people always have and always will take it; meaning there are inevitable deaths and casualties that could be avoided with the right guidance and legislation.
