Carving Your Own Gravestone

  • Callum Baker

It’s a curious thing, documenting a friend carving their own gravestone but that’s who Gabriel Hummerstone is; a curious friend… In a bid to conquer a lifetime of grappling depression, Gabriel carves other people's gravestones, in his words, "everlasting symbols of love". Through carving his own he hopes to gift himself the same act of undying self-love and find peace. Documentary Photography in style, the images were taken during a visit to Gabriel's (then) home; a small disconnected caravan in the Welsh hills. Shot entirely on film, I wanted to keep the images as tangible and as physical as possible to tie in with Gabriel's work. Something similarly alchemic that requires a level of focus and material consideration.
