Giant of Grief - Batsford Prize Runner Up 2019

This self-initiated brief was to create a book cover along with a series of interior illustrations which visualise a collection of quotes surrounding grief. The quotes were taken from a wide range of different sources including Max Porter’s ‘Grief is the thing with the Feathers’, Julia Samuel’s ‘Grief Works’ and A.S Byatt's 'A New Uncanny'. These images capture how personal, fearful and chaotic grief can be. The shadows became evocative of the enigmatic and changing nature of grief. With grief being a subject that is rarely spoken about, my images aim to visualise these feelings which are often internalised; making the intangible something tangible.
