Goldsmiths, Design: Fashion Constellation Exhibition - Wax Fabric Research Project

  • Deji Feyisetan

Research project focused on an archive piece from Goldsmiths College Textile Collection: half a yard of custom wax-resist printed cotton for a labour union election in Cameroon in the 1960s. Subtopics of focus included the link to Dutch colonisation in Asia leading to industrial replications of Indonesian batik prints marketed to Africa & also modern trade routes to London's West African communities. Design outcomes include a podcast & sound design, interviews from fabric retailers and market vendors from Turnpike Lane and Deptford as well as tailors. Original prints from the respective markets' renowned fabric stalls and film abstractions from swatches collected from key locations.
