University project. This costume was designed by Odile Dix-Mireaux for the Gormenghast mini-series. (BBC 2000)

I was very inspired by the period-style dress that Fuchsia wears in the mini-series, and I wanted to make something in a similar style, as if it would be another dress in the same wardrobe-- an emulation of personal style. The original design contained the phrase "mother of pearl" and I thought it might be fun to emulate the iridescent quality of an abalone shell on the dress itself.

The dress is made of pink stretch velvet that I spray-dyed with an acrylic ink and surgical spirit mixture to create an ombré effect. This is how many hobbyists dye synthetic wigs, and I wanted to test it out on fabric and see how it worked. Over the top of the velvet, I mounted lime-green organza, and beaded the bodice with clear silver-lined, iridescent, pearlised, and crystal-coloured of Czech seed beads.
