The aim was to produce Menswear/Unisex knitwear for commercial Fashion. Influenced by gridded and indented walls coming from an architectural point of view by using as primary research photographs of colorful shipping and bin containers from around Glasgow and Amsterdam. Looking closer into the surface of each one of my photographs I wanted to mix up the different textures that are presented. Under the use of a scanner, I collaged together different photographs to create a mixed pattern image. Taking the textured and structured 3D lines I translated it into knitwear by using a variety of different weight cotton yarns combined with the use of lycra as a placement in the samples. The lycra gave the fabric a great stretch, and also the structured element that you can see in my photographs.

With a combination of bold to thin linear drawings using different thicknesses of pens and cut out card to give raised elements. I developed a range of drawings that got me experimenting with distorting the straight line without making the line disappear. Drawing linear structures of my images encouraged me to then use knitting techniques to create different manipulated samples.

In the knitwear you can see a mixture of horizontal and vertical lines with the use of linking different samples together in order to get the exact translation from my drawings. I wanted to represent the same depth in my knitwear as well as you can see in my photographs, therefore using the lycra has given it a great bulkiness and 3D effect with the contrast of a range of different thicknesses of cottons. The lycra makes the cotton raise itself in a natural way that can’t be controlled, and that is the beauty in it.
