GroKit

An urban biodiversity project aiming to aid declining moth populations in urban areas by encouraging consumers to introduce more habitat spaces for moths and other species into their gardens, as well as changing attitudes where moths are seen as pests.

My solution to the issue of declining moth populations in urban areas was to find a way to encourage consumers to put more habitable plantation into their gardens that could be used by the native moths, because habitat loss due to urbanisation was such a big factor in their population decline.
To do this I decided to design a plant kit for children aged 6 - 13 containing some specially selected plants for them to grow that would create the foundation for a habitat catering to native UK moths.
Each GroKit comes with 3 plant pots, 3 seed packets, a bag of mineral rich soil and an instruction booklet, everything necessary for the child to begin their own small garden that provides a habitat for moths. The seed packets selected provide plants moths specifically rely on for habitat.
This aims to educate the younger generation about moths and why they are an important species, so that as they get older they think more carefully about how they garden, what they plant and how they can help local moth populations.
