Masks can reveal and masks can hide. In the pre-internet era, masking used to be a ritual act that connected the community with the spiritual world. Since then, we have become merely a medium and have lost our identity. In another reality, masking used to be a theatrical act that freed one’s soul. Hundreds of years later, today, some choose to craft masks that are perceived to be likable while they bury their innate freedom. Hannya explores social media as an archive of crafted masks, and how these masks are transforming us both physically and mentally
