Helm - Type Design

  • Sam Rawbone

‘Helm’ was developed as a display typeface as part of a quick two-week project. The two main areas that this is drawn from was the Vienna succession movement and its links with the aesthetic movement of art nouveau. With both its elegant line work but also its strict geometric code. But then combining this with the influences from the modular type and futuristic typestyles of the present day. Referencing very mechanical and sci-fi shapes to try to marry and connect the two styles together to gain something that is looking forward without losing the emotional elegance which much of the futuristic typefaces lack. Another element of the type has been designed to be overlaid to create unique hieroglyphics of letters as inspired but the Vienna succession artist’s way of creating their signatures.
