HUMAN MACHINE X YI LING KUO

  • Pao Han Lin
This AW16/17 Collection explores the essence of human mechanisms in both fundamental and futuristic aspects.

We picture absent humanity as the breakdown of human body. This has become a centre point in our research. Moving parts being disassembled and reassembled has inspired us to focus on human mechanisms. By looking at a range of artists’ work, such as Hans Bellmer, Stelarc, and so on, we took Bellmer’s silhouetts and utilised Brion Gysin’s Cut Up Technique to work on a series of collages to develop our designs.

String puppets bring in the idea of movements being controlled and restrained by the strings. At the same time, movement is closed connected to the existence of these strings. This idea has been developed into the knitting and lacing technique widely used in this collection.

Machines and mechanisms have always played the role within the ideas of robots and cyborg. Metal parts such as bolts and screws were the inspiration for textures which has created a complex yet regular sequence of knit patterns.
