I Looked Along the River to the Shores of Silvertown

  • Cameron McFarlane

Silvertown and North Woolwich is undergoing significant development. This is an area with a proud history of industry. Despite the region being so obviously neglected from meaningful investment, the community has created a space that is welcoming and inclusive of all. The people are faced with social challenges that are almost unparalleled to other parts of the UK. Currently, the area has a negative reputation, with links to gang violence prevailing. On ground level, this reputation seems undeserved. During my time exploring, I have met with local and ex-local people, charity workers and business owners. All of whom have displayed pride and passion, of which I have never seen the like elsewhere. The worry now for Silvertown and North Woolwich is that it will change beyond recognition; similarly to many London Boroughs in accepting the short-term economic benefits of gentrification over sustainable community planning.
