If You Stand For Nothing What Do You Fall For?

These series of photographs were taken during a protest in Oxford Street in London. I had completely stumbled into the protest without knowing what was happening. Leaving Oxford Street station all I could hear was the booming chants and the sounds of drums illuminating the streets. A sea of signs and colours waved through the wide streets usually bearing busy shoppers. Luckily my arsenal of cameras. My Canon 600D, Centon Film 50Mm and lastly my Canon 514Xl Super 8 Camera. Skateboard at my feet I pushed through the streets as the crowds walked in the opposite direction, One hand taking stills whilst the other hand filming in Super 8 for my filming projects. The sense of true community an idea of a common goal was quickly deflated with the ignition of flares and flags of St George as the EDL (English Defence Leauge) rattled through the crowds. I engulfed red smoke as I got as close as possible to snap the shots. through my own chants of "FUCK YOU, PISS OFF" I managed to take the photo in which one me the 2019 John Lyon photography competition judged by Andy Donovan - a renowned army photographer. I edited the photos using the Adobe Photography Suite, blending colour and black and white photography as to seize the onlookers attention and to also show the irony within the EDL movement, with the flag of St George being a symbol of heroism but mating the same colour of the smoke emanating from the flares which have a distinct sinister look and intention.
