Illusion reflection (Installations at Victoria Park, London)

  • Tanausu Herrera

Inspired by the teachings of Zen Master Bankei Yōtaku that resonated with Tanausu's experience of awakening, Tanausu creates installations with mirrors, black cloth and dead tree trunks to draw a parallel between the illusion of form, death and decay created by the mind to the mirror like quality of the pure mind as Bankei explains in his teachings. Bankei underscores the notion that, intrinsically, there is no distinction between the reflecting function of the mirror mind and the reflected images or objects, moving away from the tendency of the impure mind to label and categorise the reflections, enlightenment is to recover one's original insight in which no duality exists between the seer and the seen.
