Imperium

  • Christopher Johnstone-Law
My work looks into imaginary, alternative worlds in contrast to the contemporary one we inhabit. I have created a place that I use as a means of psychological escape from my anxieties in the real world. I call this world ‘Invenire’.
I use Birmingham city centre as my visual starting point for creating a city called ‘Imperium’. I photographed the area around Birmingham City Council House and Victoria Square, and uses these existing structures to build a dark neo-gothic, futuristic environment filled with monumental skyscrapers. Paradoxically, while providing an escapist fantasy this sinister scenario also reflects my anxieties about urban life today.
My work is influenced by the landscapes featured in the short animated film ‘Poet Anderson’ (2014) directed by Tom DeLonge, Edgar Martins and Sergio Martins.
