InMyBag People: Ben Erben

We chat to the Berlin-based strategic brand development expert about his mobile life.

How did you get into your profession?

I developed an interest for design early on, inspired by my parents (father artist, mother writer) studied Graphic Design, worked in advertising and Design in Berlin and London then moved to strategic brand development and set up my own agency in 2002.

What sort of clients do you work with?

From start ups to blue chip clients, corporates and family run businesses across many different industries: automotive, insurance, healthcare, NGOs, education, hospitality, etc.

What’s in your (professional) bag?

Laptop, phone, ipad, pen, headphones.

What lesson have you learnt the hard way?

Always back up your data and emails!

What are the best and worst things about your profession?

To be creative, to inspire people, to add value to businesses, to get into a wide range of industries, to solve problems, to not have a deep enough impact at times, clients don’t always see the value we add, lack of courage.

What advice would you give people trying to make their way in your profession?

Have a philosophy, be courageous and daring, be bold and defend your ideas, be critical, never go with the default option, don’t present ideas you don’t fully support and don’t take it personally.

What is the most indispensable tool of your trade?

Your curiosity and ability to connect dots and see things others don’t, your imagination (in more mundane matters: your laptop and a pen).

Who inspires you and why?

Artists and their unparalleled conviction to do what they think is right. Craftsmen who take pride in their work.

Favourite food

Pasta a.o.p. (alio, olio, peperoncino).

Favourite drink

Best book that not enough people know about?

The one I’m writing (and ‘1900 The Pianist on the Ocean — Alessandro Baricco).

Where can we find out more about you? but better to meet me in person!
