Interview with Gekko Glass

  • Sophie Smith

Artist feature talking to Gekko Glass about their latest release.

Gekkø Glass formed in an almost random act of fate. Stuart and Joe had been toying with the idea of being in a band together when bumping into Scarlett at the pub, and here I am interviewing them now! From the get-go, I was intrigued by how they’d sound knowing Scarlett’s history of drumming in metal bands.

“It’s not one person’s story, it’s everyone's story”

When I was listening, I found it hard to pinpoint any one genre. Varying between alt-rock, and indie rock riffs similar to the likes of The Arctic Monkeys.

Did you go in to (Gekkø Glass) knowing what genre you were going for, or was it a happy accident?

S: “Happy accident.”
J: “We had this idea of indie/ alternative rock: Strokes, Queens of the Stone Age, Foals sort of vibe. But then blending it with Scarlett’s metal influences and Dyfed’s (vocalist) own influences it ended in something a bit different.”
Joe talked about writing Gekkian “It was me writing the song in mine and Stu’s garden in the height of Summer. We were playing along to Sandstorm; it was on in the background. I started playing stab-y 2 note chords and it just fit with Sandstorm
Though listening to Gekkian, you wouldn’t instantly compare the two songs as the original riff wasn’t used. But it formed the foundation of a banging song.
What I found particularly interesting was how the band collaborated with every single part of the song, including the lyrics. “We all sat together and wrote the lyrics whilst we were having a few drinks. It’s not one person’s story, it’s everybody’s story.”- Scarlett

Having not played a gig yet, how did you know the song as it is, was the final formed version?

Scarlett: “I think it was the feel of it for us. We got to a sort of point, what parts of this do we not love? None of it. It felt complete, it felt like a song, it felt like us.”
We chatted a lot about their experience with producing Gekkian, as well as the other four songs they have recorded with Claire at CLS Productions. “Claire, really helped shape the sound of the song and made it feel fuller.”

The good news is, if you enjoyed Gekkian, you shouldn’t have to wait too much longer for Gekkø Glass's next release. They will be releasing At 10 in early April, so keep an eye out on all streaming platforms. We look forward to seeing Gekkø Glass live this year! You can listen to Gekkø Glass here on Spotify.
