With Covid still gripping the UK throughout 2021, JAM on the Marsh delivered live events yet at government-restricted 50% capacity for indoor ticketed events, temperature testing, guidance to socially distanced seating and one-way systems. From 8th – 18th July, JAM on the Marsh brought high quality local and visiting artists to Kent's Romney Marsh, for the cultural, social and economic benefit of the community, that would not otherwise happen. With restricted audiences and public nervousness, JAM filmed many events for VIRTUAL release in the Autumn, driving engagement, inclusion and enjoyment across the UK and worldwide. The 11-days and 28 live events of music, theatre, photography, art and workshops in July drew 12,300 people, to events across the Marsh. World renowned soloists Lesley Garrett, James Gilchrist and Michael Collins made their debuts at JAM on the Marsh. Changeling Theatre returned with A Midsummer Night’s Dream open-air at The Star pub, St Mary in the Marsh. London Mozart Players, James Gilchrist and Ben Goldscheider performed Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, Canterbury Cathedral Choir performed Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. JAM President, Paul Mealor conducted the premiere of our Festival Commission by sensational Jack Oades, with works by Jonathan Dove and Mealor. Nearly all events were sold out, albeit at 50% Covid-capacity. Sadly, due to Covid, we were not able to continue our year-round weekly community education. Yet, when restrictions in schools eased, during the festival, JAM reacted quickly to bring 2 inspirational workshops in Brookland, Dymchurch and New Romney primary schools. Our weekly in-school singing has now resumed. JAM released 8 concerts and 6 exhibitions as JAM on the Marsh: VIRTUAL from 22nd October- 25th November. VIRTUAL ensured access and benefit, overcoming barriers of age, income, disability, transport and isolation, as all events were free-to-watch via our website. The varied and inspirational events of JAM on the Marsh 2021, delivered live and digitally, drew a total audience of 23,006. Plans are now well underway for 2022, bringing incredible artists to the festival, new commissions and community projects.
