Jazz 'N' Bass feat DJ Storm 28/04/17

  • Adam Neil-Jones

JAZZ N BASS was a massive end of year party by Goldsmiths University Music Department at the Student Union showcasing the rich heritage of Jazz culture in the department ending in a DnB rave! As part of my Creative Research Project during the final year of my degree in Music, I conceptualised and directed this successful 9 hour live music event. The project focused on the musicological and cultural relationship between the genres of Jazz and Drum and Bass which culminated in the production of a 20 minute EP, a website, research essay and this live event. Through research and networking I reached out to potential headline DJs and attracted the attention of an iconic and prolific DnB pioneer, DJ Storm. A legend of vintage remix, the veteran swing and bass DJ Chris Tofu also performed at the party. Event Guide At 7.30pm the music started with assessed performances from various Jazz ensembles followed by a big band show from the Creative Jazz Ensemble led by Paul Bartholomew. The final assessment was a showcase of my self produced DnB track performed with the big band. From 10pm the night transitioned into a rave with a line up of exemplary DJs. The night was designed to start with liquid drum n bass, to swing n bass through to the roots of old school jungle. To kick off I decided to showcase homegrown talent from Goldsmiths Bass Society - Bedou, a liquid DnB specialist that will start the night off with ambient jazzy vibes and fast tempo beats. By 11pm Chris Tofu was getting everyone jiving and dancing by combining the beauty of swing music with explicit bass. Dubbed the pioneer of Swing N Bass and vintage remix, Tofu was an act not to be missed. Headlining the night was none other than DJ STORM at midnight. DJ STORM is affectionately known as "The First Lady of Drum n Bass" and winner four years running of Best Female DJ from the National Drum n Bass Awards. Finishing off the night, 'All Aboard My Ship' hosted a takeover set to see us through to the early hours of the morning. This legendary boat party crew attract ravers from all over the country for their London boat parties. https://www.facebook.com/events/1429204173821620
