Just a number, just a name: A refugee’s journey through detention in Alexandria

This is a sample of my journalism, which is available on my project page on crowd-funded journalism platform, Beacon.

This was part of a year-long reporting series on migration from Egypt's north coast towards Europe - a journey mostly taken by Syrian refugees at the time. I interviewed a group of Syrian and Palestinian-Syrian refugees extensively by telephone while they were detained in a police station in Alexandria. The photographs exhibited in the piece were sent by the refugees, and were taken on their camera phones during the course of their (failed) journey at sea and subsequent detention back on land.

The aim of this project was to give readers a first-hand perspective of what crossing the Mediterranean actually involves - both through first-person narrative and viewpoint (with the help of the photographs) - and with it, humanise those making the journey.
