Kinfolk Magazine

  • Charlotte Heal

In 2015 Charlotte was invited to Portland, Oregon by Kinfolk to lead both the creative direction and design of their bi-annual magazine. Working closely with the editorial team, Charlotte worked to re-structure the magazine itself, re-designed it’s layout and conceived new approaches to visual content, commissioning and art directing an international roster of creatives to visualise the team‘s thematic ideas for each issue. The re-design was noted for its modern sensitivity and European style — without alienating its dedicated US followers, it marked a turning point for the magazine’s expanding outlook. Over the course of the eight issues (14—21) CHD introduced a large network of creatives to the magazine, many of whom continue to work on its pages today — Pelle Crepin, Aradia Crockett, Rose Forde, Mikkel Mortesen, Sarah Maycock, Martin Andersen, Aaron Tilley, Rahel Weiss, David Lamb, Phil Dunlop to name a few. Charlotte has been invited to speak about the Kinfolk project at a range of design events, including the annual creative symposium Here by itsnicethat, held at the Royal Geographical Society, as well as at Magculture in London and KK Outlet‘s ’Meal Ticket’.
