The title (from the Latin limen, threshold) refers to the transitional phase experience by Ireland in the post-crash years, as well as the in-between spaces its citizens are coming to inhabit due to emigration.
_liminal State takes is an intimate audio narrative, the venue the reconstruction of an ordinary Irish sitting room. The few props present suggest that someone is about to leave, or has just returned.
Interviews with Irish citizens living abroad were collected and composed in two soundscapes, triggered by listeners walking by lampshades hanging in the space. Jump-cut edit pieces are interwoven with Skype calls and sounds occasionally recorded through the line to preserve their ‘distant’ quality. As the disembodied voices describe what they see through windows and doors in their respective locations abroad, they inspire in the listener a reflection on the nature of presence and absence.
