Luxury Item is the result of a day long project in which we were asked to create a visual rhetoric in response to an article. The article we chose, as a group of 7 women, was one regarding 'Pink Tax', as it is one we related to the most.
The premise behind Luxury Item is that if sanitary products are taxed as a 'luxury item', then why not use them that way. We chose to portray the tampons in 'renaissance style' photographs, with period clothing, as portraits such as these represented wealth in the past. In four hours we were able to source the outfits, the photography space, and edit the photos. The work was successful and went viral on social media, resulting in the Huffington Post picking up the story.
