M Double Skin

  • Marie Cole
Born in this World never given the choice, our narrative is already written by society and our families. So who are we? What our families tells us? What society shows us? Who we choose to believe? Who am I ?! Through the journey of discovering my identity, my relationship with the Western culture and West African culture has had a profound affect on it. The answers that these cultures have on Who I am? , no only creates a confusion but contradicts each other.
“The way the Western sees me they have already written my story The way the West African sees me they have already written my story They already know who I am I am a Black Female age between 20-25 That is all Objectified Marginalised This is something I have internalised”
This composition as a whole contains three individual pieces, representing the control of those outside influences and the way they perceive your identity.
The individual pieces depict my awareness through three different lenses, the Westerns, West Africans and my own. As much as I am influenced by those two major worlds, it’s not about their culture but how it affects me and how I react to it. MY DOUBLE SKIN is the key to understanding my work, to understand me.
Let me write my own narrative because it’s MINE.
