MA Thesis

Conceptual idea:
The box is playing with the ’classic’ bible design. The cross ’belly-band’, cut from a paper with hemp fibre, echoing monks’ classic robes, has a text Letterpress printed in silver, suggesting the cross should be removed (echoing the conclusion in the main text inside).

The hard cover box itself is clad with a leather-like paper with a gold paper for edgings. The raw box edges, exposing the grey card, suggest the revealing of a structure – reflecting the thesis approach inside.

Instead of what would be expected to be a body of a traditional book, there are two books which slide out of the box. They are in landscape format, suggesting the reader to ’look at it from another angle’ (which again is a hint of the content to come).

The change of colour, from the outer box’ black ’leather’ and gold, to the crisp white and sharp magenta of the books inside, signals a shift from an old-fashioned view to a contemporary approach to the subject.
