Made in Patacancha

  • Sabrina López
For my final MA project ‘Made in Patacancha’, I spent time living in the Peruvian Andes with local craftspeople investigating how to safeguard Peruvian handicrafts in an increasingly mechanised future. The work addresses the problems caused by industrialisation and the opportunities from increased tourism. The focus is on material identity, provenance, design and the trend of authenticity. The aim of the project is to create a new market for weavers to bring a steady income and keep their tradition alive by supporting and working with a local non-profit partner. By buying a product from the collection consumers would help finance workshops and continued education around traditional ways of dyeing and weaving to the community of Patacancha increasing the quality of natural dyeing and weaving techniques.
