Meeting at Infinity

  • Kate Lau
‘Meeting at infinity’ explores soft forms in manipulation of linearity, creating a visual where with a starting point, lines curve and flow into loops of infinity. The concept begins with the inspiration of vanishing points in projective geometry: parallel lines meeting at infinity, suggesting a drawn point of immersion within a space. My final outcome is a collection of six sculptural pieces. They are suspended hanging textile sculptures like an ephemeral form frozen in space. At the same time, they are visualised as body adornments where the distorted curved lines form and interact with the shape of the body. I used nylon woven fabric because it is transparent and delicate. However, being a synthetic material, nylon has a stiff property, enabling it to hold intricate forms. My idea of linear distortion was able to translate through my process where I physically deconstructed and manipulated the structure of textiles. From the idea of geometric linear perspective, these pieces had been developed to convey the concept of ‘meeting at infinity’ by manipulating lines into organic soft curves.
