British hip hop star J Hus has admitted that he is aware he is constantly representing urban London and uses his friends as a guideline for his work.

‘I represent in a way that even when I make music, I go back to my friends and show them my music and ask them, “how do you feel about this?” I’m definitely representing for my people,’ the Mercury Music Prize nominee said, speaking to Metro.co.uk on the red carpet of the annual awards show.
When asked about the role he is trying to play in helping to diversify the music industry, in sound and demographic, he added: ‘I think it’s already diverse. The mini-genres in music is all one now. Like with my music you can hear influences of reggae, basement, acrobats and hip hop all in one. I feel like music is all in one now.’
J Hus is nominated alongside 11 other acts for the acclaimed prize including Ed Sheeran, Blossoms and Kate Tempest, but he admitted that he’s rooting for Stormzy if it’s not his own turn to win.
