MIRRORS OF CHANGE- GALICIA

  • Nahuel Contreras
In this ongoing project I have reflected stories of change through portraiture, capturing communities and the shifts that occur when people go through transition. As the process of change is not always active and visible, some subtle, I established relationships as a prerequisite before shooting to produce discourses in a variety of contexts. I produced outcomes in both Galicia, a rural coastal region in north-west Spain, and London, a cosmopolitan and diverse metropolis. I created a contrast between the stories of those living in two societies on the opposite ends of the spectrum, highlighting the comparisons and differences and how stories of change could either be the outcome of choice or dictated by circumstances. Throughout the London series, there is a strong emphasis on the effects of gentrification, from the displacement of people from their homes, to the ever-encroaching skylines. The visual narratives throughout the project mirror the dual theme: the changing community and the lives affected.
